Purchasing and Preserving Your Wedding Gown

PURCHASING

Your gown is a significant part of your wedding planning.  It is a major decision and expense to purchase and care for your gown` both before and after the celebration.  To be happy with your gown, gain knowledge before purchasing.

Wedding gowns are made with sensitive fabrics and trims in a variety of combinations, so knowledge about what you are purchasing is very important.

*  Can it be cleaned?  Look carefully at all care labels and guidelines for suggested pressing and cleaning methods.

*  Note!  Beads, Sequins and other fancy trims may not hold up to either dry-cleaning or wet cleaning.

*  What precautions are given for pressing the fabric and trims?

*  An important decision for you may be to purchase from a reliable company that stands behind it’s products.

PRESERVING

Clean your gown as quickly as possible after the ceremony to remove any food or beverage spills that can damage the gown’s materials.  Beverage spills disappear into fabric and surface upon cleaning.

*  Do let your cleaner know of any spills and the type of beverage.

*  NEVER store your gown in a plastic gown bag.  Chemicals in the plastic are unstable and can cause yellowing and build up dust, mold, and mildew.

*  NEVER put your gown in “hermetically” or “vacuum” sealed container.  All textiles need to breathe and some air circulation is advised.

*  Specially treated boxes are recommended for long-term storage.  Usually, you can purchase a package price that will include the pressing prior to the wedding and the cleaning and preservation of your gown afterward.  The treated boxes are acid-neutral.  Note!  A standard cardboard box contains acid!

STORING

A few storage tips will assure that your gown will be beautiful for an extended period of time.  The gown will then be available for future generations of wearers.

*  Store the wedding gown box in an inside closet.

*  Avoid exposure to changing temperatures.

*  Extreme temperatures of outside walls especially contribute to break down fabrics.
